What are the Differences?

Whirlpools, steam, infra-red, or plain old heat? Which one is best?

There have been far more studies on the Finnish, plain old heat, saunas than all of the others. This alone does not make them better or less effective than the other types but more studied likely because they have been used for a long time and can get to the highest temperatures.

The general consensus is that the high heat makes the Finnish saunas the most therapeutic overall. The temperatures generally range from 160 to 200 degrees F. One of the benefits from the high heat is for heart health and raising the beats per minute similar to a cardio exercise. Research also indicates that with increasing frequency of use, up to seven times per week, the benefits increase for heart health, the respiratory system and several other health markers!

Whirlpool and steam sauna benefits are great for muscles and joints and not to be discounted. In addition, skin conditions may improve along with blood flow.

The infrared sauna benefits have the least amount of research to date but have been found to be therapeutic for circulation and skin. Due to the lower heat output, some studies indicate less effectiveness in some areas. The red-light spectrum is also of benefit with recent research pointing to amazing surface to deep tissue therapy depending on wave length.

The Scandinavian culture has used the dry heat saunas for hundreds of years as part of their social and health routine with great success.
