If you are reading this article, you likely already know the excruciating pain and possibly seeking sciatica pain relief supplements. Sciatica is a common condition that causes pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs. This is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve.
Sciatic Nerve Pain Causes
The sciatic nerve runs from the lower spine to the feet and provides feeling to these areas. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body. Sciatica can be caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or other conditions that compress or irritate the nerve. The pain of sciatica can range from mild to severe and may be constant or intermittent. It may also radiate down one leg or both legs. We offer a list of sciatica pain relief supplements in this article.
The most common treatment for sciatica is medication. Medications are used to reduce inflammation and pain in the area. Physical therapy can also be used to help with sciatica symptoms. Physical therapy includes exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles in the back and legs. Surgery may be an option for people who have not responded to other treatments or who have severe symptoms that do not improve over time.
Personal Sciatica Experience
I have had many bouts with sciatica over the years. It was usually from a slipped or herniated disc. I also have spinal stenosis that is a narrowing of the nerve pathway. Most recently, I had a flareup that was not from an injury so it likely was caused by the stenosis. This episode turned out to be the most painful and longest lasting. Since I had not slipped the lumbar disc, I decided not to go to the chiropractor.
It was also too painful to leave the house and impossible to even sleep for several days. Chiropractic is definitely beneficial so I am not suggesting otherwise. After a week of agony, I was growing weary and frustrated. I slept on the floor with my feet up for up to two hours at a time and was suffering. The options were drive to a chiropractor or do some research.
Inflammation and Sciatica
I spent time seeking cures and found mostly exercises without much help. Suggestions to see the doctor and typical useless stuff for a DIY person like me so I thought about natural supplements. I had a theory that this condition might be related to inflammation and maybe some natural anti inflammatory herbs might help. I learned a while back that Ibuprofen not only does not work but is dangerous so don’t bother.
More Observations
Sciatica emanates from the lumbar area down the back of the leg to the foot, Other issues like piriformis and bursitis may mimic sciatica in that they can inflame the nerve. Bursitis is most likely to occur at the hip bone that protrudes on your side due to lack of fluid, Piriformis is a muscle in the high buttock that can become stiff and inflamed. This is often due to sitting too much. Both conditions can also be painful but not directly due to disc herniation or slippage.
In Search of Sciatica Pain Relief Supplements as a Possibility
My theory also included a viral possibility and other reasons that did not default to disc or bone issues. I do believe that bone spurs, arthritis and bulging discs are the main culprits but thought if I could get the nerve to calm down, I might stop the terrible pain and numbness that went to my feet.
